About

Learner Intelligence

Learner Intelligence (LI) is an adaptive design strategy based on the concept that learners, given the option, will always choose the way he or she learns best. When this choice is persistent throughout the course, the number of learning paths quickly becomes so large, that each learner has a personalized learning experience. This approach emphasizes the learner and enables instructional designers to create learning experiences for diverse audiences that truly leave no learner behind.

The idea for Learner Intelligence evolved from years of instructor led training (ILT), observing adult learning processes in the classroom, and then trying to duplicate the learning experience in an asynchronous online environment. Now, small development teams or a single designer using the LI adaptive design strategy can easily create personalized learning using common development tools. LI is a perfect counter balance to Artificial Intelligence (AI) and machine learning for education.

The Center for Learner Intelligence

The Center for Learner Intelligence (TCLI) promotes the central role of the learner in a rapidly changing digital learning environment. Amid educational trends utilizing artificial intelligence and predictive analytics, the need to keep the focus on the learner is more important than ever. TCLI explores ways to preserve learner autonomy in an automated world. TCLI invites learning and development professionals, designers, researchers, and strategists to share ideas and case studies.

Our Logo

The Center for Learner Intelligence logo symbolizes the process behind Learner Intelligence. It consists of four icons superimposed on a rectangle to create the appearance of four directional arrows. The LI process begins with the upper left icon. The question mark represents the challenge or inspiration the learner experiences when he or she engages in a learning experience.

The next icon moving clockwise is the glowing light bulb, a common symbol for ideas. This represents the learner’s initial reaction to learning and the point where a need or desire arises. The third icon, the checkmark, is foundational to the Learner Intelligence model. This represents the learner’s choice to satisfy a learning need or desire. This personal choice brings about a change in either content or delivery.

The final icon is a counter clockwise circular arrow representing feedback. The learning experience changes as a result of the learner’s actions, and with that change the reiterative process begins again. The four arrows are a subtle visual effect that further emphasizes the personalized paths available to the learner.
