Why is Learner Intelligence Important?

If you have been keeping up with the current learning trends you know that the “one size fits all” mantra has been totally discredited. Modern learners are tech savvy, expect to find relevant information quickly, and want to have some control of the learning process. Creating linear courses with a “death by next button” design approach is just not enough.

The globalization of online learning only magnifies the problem, forcing designers to train audiences that are becoming increasingly more diverse. There is a fervent need to create adaptive training that provides unique learning experiences for unique learners. Artificial Intelligence (AI) is beginning to be touted as the solution. However, AI powered instruction is still in the early stages, requires a third-party platform, and can be both confusing and costly.

Enter Learner Intelligence (LI) as an adaptive design approach that can be easily implemented using popular design tools such as Lectora and Storyline. LI is important because it enables instructional designers to develop adaptive courses today that satisfy the needs of modern learners at any scale. LI is also important because unlike AI, the learner does not sacrifice control over the learning experience. Learners have more control of the learning process in courses developed with LI than typical linear courses created with branching.

The long-term perspective on LI design is also important. AI powered instruction focuses on changing the learning experience based upon the learners past and current actions. However, learners are not static, and the learner’s needs commonly change while learning, something that can cause havoc with an AI system. For example, while taking a course you may suddenly want to see a video version of the content. If you are joined by a friend while taking the course, an AI system would not be able to anticipate what you need when you need it.

Learner Intelligence is all about giving the learner autonomy over their learning. The long-term vision is for a combination of LI and AI methods to provide complex adaptability while still leaving the learner in control. Combining the advantages of both approaches may be the ideal learning platform for life-long learners.
